(Presence from Elsewhere)

An online extension allows remote visitors to influence the physical installation. Through a connected simulation, people outside the room can participate in shaping the environment experienced by those inside.

This introduces another question: who gets to determine the boundaries of a shared space, particularly when those influencing it are not physically present?

What does it mean to be present?

The installation uses a deliberately limited form of sensing, registering movements across a threshold rather than identifying individuals.

This reduction raises a question central to Personal Bubble: how much of ourselves must become measurable for a technological system to acknowledge our presence?

By translating these minimal signals into physical movement, A Membrane of Presence makes the consequences of technological mediation tangible. The room responds, but its understanding of those who inhabit it remains partial.
